BLEACHING YOUR TEETH

BEFORE BLEACHING AFTER BLEACHING

Can I benefit from bleaching?

Almost anyone can brighten their teeth through bleaching. A dentist can best determine if bleaching will work for you.

How is bleaching performed?

A custom bleaching tray that fits over your teeth is made by your dentist. Then, a specially formulated whitening gel is placed into the tray at home by the patient. The tray and gel are worn for about six hours, usually overnight while sleeping. In one to two weeks, outstanding results can be obtained. The gels dispensed by dentist work far better than those available over-the-counter.

What makes bleaching work?

The bleaching gel placed into the custom tray contains the active ingredient carbamide peroxide. It is believed the breakdown of carbamide peroxide causes oxygen to enter the tooth enamel and dentin which in turn lightens the tooth’s color. The structure of the tooth remains unchanged.

How long will the bleaching last?

Periodic re-treatment once or twice a year may be desirable, especially for patients who smoke or drink moderate amounts of coffee and tea. The tray and bleaching gel are usually only worn one or two nights during touch-ups.

Is bleaching safe and effective?

YES! Research has shown that bleaching, under the supervision of a dentist, causes practically no side effects, is quite safe, and very effective. Some patients experience increased tooth sensitivity to cold during treatment, but the sensitivity usually goes away shortly after bleaching has ended.
